With digitization and people smugglers, anyone can get to the United States without a problem, and no authority will be able to track him or her down, said Mark Krikorian, Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a Washington-based think tank, at an event of the MCC Budapest Lectures series.
ACIS is an independent, non-profit research organization founded in 1985 and the only think tank in the US dedicated to research and policy analysis of the economic, social, demographic, fiscal and other impacts of immigration on the United States.
Mark Krikorian said at the event that since the Biden administration took office, masses have flooded the Mexico-US border. According to him, mass arrivals and illegal border crossings can all be traced back to the fact that in most of the countries of origin - neighboring and Central American countries - the economy is in ruins, with huge holes in the welfare and social safety net.
The expert emphasized that "immigration is a federal issue, individual states are just implementers in the formula". It would therefore be crucial for the administration in Washington to sense the trouble and protect the southern states from invasion. "If the political will is lacking at the federal level, member states are powerless," the director pointed out.
