Young People and the Media: The Impact of Social Media Use in Central Asia

At the turn of the millennium, barely one percent of Pakistan’s population used the Internet. Twenty years later, this figure had grown to 54 percent, which translate into approximatly 118 million citizens having access to the Internet. Currently, 64 percent of the country’s population is under 30 years, while 29 percent belongs to the 15 to 29 years age bracket. This means that in the couse of the past decades, tens of millions of young people in the Central Asian nation became Internet users.

What are the implications of ever-increasing connectivity in Pakistan and the region? How does social media influence the country’s political landscape and society, as well as individual prospects? Are there any particular characteristics in this regard that are typical of Pakistan or the wider region? What are the favorite platforms used by youth and what are the leading concerns related to social media in the country? These are the questions to be explored at our event entitled Young People and the Media: The Impact of Social Media Use in Central Asia.
