On 9 May 2022, in the third month of the French Presidency of the EU and the Russian-Ukrainian war, Emmanuel Macron announced a new initiative in the European Parliament. He based this statement on the idea of former French President François Mitterrand, who proposed the creation of a European Political Community. The first meeting was attended by representatives of all 44 European countries (except Russia and Belarus) in Prague on 6 October 2022, marking the beginning of this new proposal.
- What will happen next, what form will it take, will it be a consensus initiative or not?
- Will this be the realization of a multi-speed Europe, or will it be a different class for each Member State?
- What do the candidate countries think about all this: is it a question of perpetuating the 'wait and see', or rather of making it more fruitful with concrete cooperation projects at the end?
- Lastly, what concrete answers can be given to Ukraine's European prospects when the geopolitical situation can no longer be satisfied with the status quo and the situation of the other candidate countries must be taken into account?
These are the questions that will be addressed at a special event organized by the Mathias Corvinus Collegium's Center for European Studies on March 21 in Budapest, with the participation of representatives of candidate countries, Member States and civil society.
