Réka Zsuzsánna Máthé

Réka Zsuzsánna Máthé, PhD is a senior researcher at the Mathias Corvinus Collegium, a research fellow at the European Strategy Research Institute of the National Public Service University (EUSTRAT), and an assistant professor at Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania. She obtained her PhD degree (summa cum lauda) at the University of Public Service. Within the framework of the PhD training, she studied with a scholarship at Charles University in Prague. Concommittently to her doctoral studies, she completed the program of the College of Europe, Bruges, where she graduated with a master's degree in European political science and public administration. Prior to that, she obtained a degree in the management of public institutions at the master's program jointly operated by Michigan State University and Babes-Bolyai University. She completed her higher education in Romanian, German, English and French.

This paper analyzes an atypical inter-organizational collaboration aimed at providing basic needs for refugees in five transitory care centers (“aid points”) set up temporarily in Hungary, near to the Ukrainian border in the emergency situation created as a result of the outbreak of the war. The purpose is to explore enables and barriers of the collaborations took place in five care centers, from a managerial approach. As the three main actors presented in each care center very rarely work together usually, particular attention was paid to the leaders’ challenge of managing cognitive diversity during the collaboration in the field (care center) as part of an emergency / disaster management.

The role that a strong civil society plays in socio-economic development is a subject of major scholarly attention today. Many benefi ts from having a strong civil society are reported in the literature. Th ere is, however, no generally accepted view regarding how capacity-building eff orts can help to develop a strong civil society, especially in the Central and Eastern European countries. The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand the causal mechanisms existing between capacity-building eff orts, a strengthened civil society and socioeconomic development. Th is case study suggests that a Hungarian local government did appear to strengthen associational activities in its community. Using process tracing, the research identifi es specifi c factors that lead this village to take these uncommon steps, and it assesses the implications for civic life.
