The American South is one of the most distinctive regions of the United States. Our guest Gergely Szilvay (historian, Hungarian political thinker, journalist at Mandiner.hu and author of six books) is going to chart a course through the history and culture of the region. We can hear about cotton and plantation owners; slavery and the Civil War; segregation, the civil rights movement, and the Ku Klux Klan. However, it becomes clear that the American South is much more than that: in many respects, this Mediterranean region differs from the American North, whether in terms of temperament or worldview. It is as much a periphery as Central Europe, with similar historical traumas and a comparable minority complex.

The lecture will be in English.
