The success story of the Southeast Asian automotive industry in the 21st century is unquestionable. Many factors have contributed to the development from import substitution to a more liberalized WTO policy regime. Our next guest lecturer Kaoru Natsuda, the Professor of the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies, at the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University will provide insight into the industrial policies of Southeast Asian economies in their motor vehicle industries. He will focus on the role of Japan as far as inward automotive investment is concerned in the region, and he will reveal the findings of his book entitled Automotive Industrialization: Industrial Policy and Development in Southeast Asia. KAORU NATSUDA is a Professor at the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan. He was a visiting professor at Budapest Business School (2019-2020) and also a visiting scholar at Charles University in Prague (2015-2016). He obtained his Ph.D in Economics from the University of Sydney, Australia, and his MA in International Development Studies from the University of Bradford, UK. His research interests include industrial development, rural development, and political economy in Asia and Central Europe. He published papers in many journals including Review of International Political Economy, European Journal of Development Research, Canadian Journal of Development Studies, Eurasian Geography and Economics, Asia Europe Journal, Journal of the Asia Pacific Singapore Economic Review, and Bulletin of the Indonesian Economic Studies. His book (co-authored with John Thoburn), Automotive Industrialization: Industrial Policy and Development in Southeast Asia, was published by Routledge in 2021. He serves as a senior associate editor of PSU Research Review and an editorial board member of the International Journal of Development Issues.

CSABA MOLDICZ is the Head of the School of International Relations of MCC. His main research area is the economic relations between the European Union and China, with a special focus on the Central and Eastern European region. He has edited several books and published two monographs. His first book, published in Hungarian, was written in reflection on the 2008-2009 crisis, while his book, published in 2020 by Routledge, focused on the European dimension of the US-China technological rivalry.
